SAN BLAS

These islands are the most popular sailing destination in Panama due to their natural postcard perfect beauty - palm lined islands, white sand, turquoise water.  The islands belong to the Guna Yala indigenous reserve. Only Guna people are allowed to inhabit the islands., which has been a blessing as the islands are pretty much intact and the way of life is still quite simple, most Gunas live off of fishing and coconuts.  In order to protect their territory, the Gunas only let tourists sail in certain areas, which are only accessible by plane or by close to an 8 hour sail.

LAS PERLAS

As its name states it, this archipelago was full of pearls during the colonial conquest years.  Las Perlas has many islands of which only a few are inhabited.   There are basically no sailboats there so the pristine white sand beaches are for you to have. Even the 'Survivor' series was filmed on these islands because it's so virgin.  Humpback whale mating season goes on from July to October and it is a spectacle not to miss. Not only can you see them do their magestic jumps, but you can hear them sing and woo their mate through the hull of the boat! Definitely a good hair-raising experience. There's plenty of fish and great snorkeling around coral and rocks close to shore too.  Only an hour away from Panama City by ferry, or 30 minutes by flight, these islands are easily accessible.

BOCA CHICA

This is an area that has been only visited by those looking for big game fishing. There are hardly any other sailboats around and here too you can have entire islands for yourself when visiting this area. This is as off the beaten track as it gets!  You must make your way to David, normally by flight as it only takes an hour, then you hire a taxi to get you to Boca Chica on the coast for another hour.  Beautiful scenery, tons of different flora and fauna on each island, and just peaceful surroundings. From here is possible to sail to Islas Secas which are stunning too.

BOCAS DEL TORO

Bocas is known for two main activities: surfing and partying.   Colon Island, which is the main island, has a large number of small hotels and hostels as well as a ton of restaurants and bars along the main street  This town comes to life at night when people are out until the wee hours of the morning.   During the day, the best surf is off of  Bastimentos island, but you can catch decent waves on Carenero island as well.  For sailiing you can get out to Cayo Zapatilla to enjoy a pristine beach, Dolphin bay, to hopefully get sight of dolphins playing around, and if you  have enough days you can make a trip to spectacular Escudo de Veraguas, which has a swimming hole surrounded by lush jungle.
